Sompting in Bloom is a Sompting Parish Council initiative, which was started after the Adur in Bloom competition was discontinued.

Instead of gardens being nominated, all the Parish Councillors tour the whole of Sompting between them, and the best gardens are selected. From this, a short-list is drawn up, and finally the First, Second and Third are chosen by Councillors.

A presentation ceremony then follows, with the winner being awarded the Fred Burns trophy. This trophy, funded by Sompting Parish Council in memory of former Councillor (and past chairman) Fred Burns,was originally awarded for the best Sompting garden in Adur in Bloom.
