COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PLAN

You may have seen in the press recently that Sompting Parish Council is developing a number of plans to improve the quality of life in our Community.

This plan includes refurbishing the Community Centre in Loose Lane, to include a Parish Office, and building a Sports facility on Sompting Recreation Ground - to include Public Toilets, which will be open and accessible to all residents.

You may ask why, when our buildings are already well used.

Because currently there are limitations on the activities that can be offered. The Community Centre needs updating, and the current facilities for sports are very unsatisfactory, and need bringing up to date. Also, there are no public toilet facilities in Sompting - the existing block on the Recreation Ground has been out of use for many years, which the Parish Council does not think is acceptable.

Community buildings can play an important role in bringing local neighbourhoods together, encouraging a sense of community. By providing a central focal point, they can help overcome the loneliness and isolation that certain groups (particularly the elderly) are vulnerable to. By ensuring that such facilities are fully accessible to diasbled groups, this can help release the pressure on their families. Community buildings can provide opportunities for socialising, and enjoying spare time in a safe and secure environment.

The Parish Office will also provide a base for the voluntary/statutory sector to work from in the community, enabling them to provide better services, tailor made for and more responsive to the needs of our community.

Last, but not least, it will provide a much needed focal point for our village, as Sompting quite simply often gets overlooked!
